Lumberton Elementary School

Where Excellence Is What We Do

Military Family Hub

Lumberton Elementary School welcomes military-connected families and honors the unique challenges and strengths associated with military service. We are dedicated to supporting the academic, social, and emotional needs of our military-connected students.

Transition Planning:

To register a new military student, please contact our registrar at (601) 796-3721.

For specific questions about transitioning to Lumberton Elementary School, please contact our school counselor.

Mental Health Services:

Our school counselors and school-based positive behavioral specialists are available to support students with academic, peer, and personal concerns, including deployment and reintegration, family changes, and the development of healthy coping strategies.

Student Education Services:

If your child receives special education services, has an IEP or 504 plan, or participates in gifted services, please inform the school during enrollment. This information allows us to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of services. For additional details, please visit our Department of Special Services.

Student-Led Transition Program:

Lumberton Elementary School offers a student-led transition program designed to support military-connected students as they adjust to our school community. This program is supported by members of our Student Council, who play an active role in welcoming and assisting new students.

Program components include:

  • Student Ambassador Welcome Team:
Student Council members serve as ambassadors, greeting new military-connected students and helping them feel welcomed, supported, and connected from their first day.

  • Peer Mentorship Program:
Each new military-connected student is paired with a peer mentor from their class. Peers accompany students during activities, lunch, and classroom activities to help build friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

  • Counselor-Facilitated Support Groups:
Small-group sessions led by a school counselor provide a safe, supportive space for students to share experiences and emotions related to school transitions. Students are guided in developing coping strategies, managing emotions, and building resilience.

  • Academic Support and Tutoring:
Additional academic support and tutoring are available for students who may need assistance adjusting to new academic expectations or catching up with curriculum content.

Academic Planning:

Academic planning is a critical component of student success, especially for military-connected students who may experience frequent transitions. At Lumberton Elementary School, we have developed a comprehensive academic planning process designed to ensure a smooth and successful integration into our curriculum.

This process includes a careful review of academic records to identify strengths, gaps, and instructional needs. Parents are encouraged to partner with our school counselors by sharing any academic concerns or transition-related needs.

For students who need additional support, we provide targeted classroom interventions, enrichment opportunities, and referrals for gifted testing when appropriate. Our teachers and counselors prioritize open communication and collaboration with families to address concerns promptly and ensure every military-connected student receives the support needed for continued academic success.

Military Recognition Events:

Each year, our school proudly honors our military community by celebrating Veterans Day around November 11 with a special program, followed by a reception to recognize and thank those who have served. We also observe the Month of the Military Child each April, including participation in Purple Up Day on April 15 to show our support for military-connected students and families. Please stay tuned for additional military-related events and celebrations throughout the year.
